Another country eliminates MNT!

Today is a special day! The World Health Organization confirmed Cambodia has eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT).

Our Club and members have so far contributed $14, 456.18 to this worthy cause.  Most of this amount has been matched by the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada as well.  Consider what we've accomplished at about $2 per vaccination, which will extend immunity from mothers to future unborn babies.

Big news - The Eliminate Project has raised $100 million dollars! Only $10 million to go to reach our goal!

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 49,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

Members of our 3-2-1 committee volunteered at the 2015 BC Child Run last weekend, which raised $1 million towards oncology research and care centres at BC Children's Hospital. Thanks to the organizers for a fun and successful event!

Members of the 3-2-1 Committee put on a Career Panel at UBC March 23, 2015 where students got a chance to talk to members of the Kiwanis club on how to get into their respective industries and how to be successful in them

Our 2015 clothing drive was a big success! We collected Women's professional attire for Dress for Success, who support underprivileged women by helping them get back into the workforce with dignity

On October 31st, 2013 we were able to raise just under $600 for the Eliminate Project during our Halloween UNICEF box solicitations at Burrard and Dunsmuir in downtown Vancouver.  When you consider a lot of this came in toonies, it's pretty amazing!  Counting the matching that the Kiwanis Foundation will give, and with the private donations received from members, our tally is about $5,000.

You can do the math at saving a mother (and her subsequent children) from maternal and neonatal tetanus for about $1.80.  Thanks Rob Mutch for organizing and Kiwanians who helped and/or donated. More events to come as this is a five-year project!

On Thursday, April 4th the Kiwanis Club of Vancouver was happy to host youth camp programs from around BC that received donations thanks to the fundraising of our members.  Those receiving funds were:

YMCA Camp Deka

Down Syndrome Research Foundation (Down Syndrome Summer Day Programs)

Camp Sunrise

YMCA Camp Elphinstone

Camp Kakhamela (Canadian Diabetes Assoc)

Camp Kidney Kids (Canadian Kidney Association)

Camp Miriam

Camp Potlatch (Boys & Girls Clubs)

Union Gospel Mission - Camp placement program

On behalf of our club, Kelly Ho, Cory Bartrim and Rob Spinner had the pleasure of presenting $1200 worth of presents (books) to 3 classes of kids ranging from kindergarten to grade 2 at Seymour Elementary School on Vancouver’s eastside.  The kids were very appreciative, as were the teachers.  Here is a mention of the donation in the Vancouver Sun…

A great time had at the Special Children's Christmas Party at the Vancouver Convention Center on December 8th.  The members of the Kiwanis Club of Vancouver helped with the extensive set up on Friday and then helped bring some Christmas cheer to some extra special kids on Saturday.  Here is a picture of a few of our members...
